Specialty food & drinks has three native forces that generic SEO misses: local tourism search behaviour (60% of your potential), NVWA-compliant claim copy, and hospitality discovery via Google. Optimise only for "organic jam" or "craft beer" and you'll never rank — and you'll leave the high-margin hospitality orders on the table.

Recognise the pain?

Three patterns why generic SEO doesn't work for specialty food.

Breweries and specialty food brands play on a different field than FMCG. Miss the rhythm and you miss the three channels that matter most.

01.
"Tourism keywords sit untouched."
"Brewery in Limburg", "visit vineyard Gelderland", "cheese farm tour Drenthe" — tourism queries are 60% of your traffic potential. Most sites barely optimise for them: no Event schema, no LocalBusiness stack, no seasonal content. TripAdvisor and VisitNL take the top-3.
02.
"Our claim copy is in the danger zone."
"Healthy", "natural", "artisanal", "pure" — the NVWA (Dutch Food Safety Authority) and the Advertising Code Committee are strict. Wrong claims cost you rankings and earn warnings. SEO agencies that don't know Dutch food regulation write copy you'll have to rewrite later.
03.
"Hospitality orders don't come via Google."
Restaurants, cafés and specialty shops look for suppliers via Google: "craft beer wholesale", "local jam for breakfast menu", "cheese supplier restaurant Utrecht". A dedicated B2B layer in your SEO strategy lands high-margin orders no one else captures — without it, you're invisible to buyers.

4 pillars of specialty food SEO

What I do specifically for specialty food & breweries.

No generic e-commerce tricks. For breweries, coffee roasters, chocolatiers and specialty food brands that want to bring their story and visibility together.

1
Origin & craft long-tail
Ranks where Albert Heijn & Bol.com can't

Specialty buyers don't Google "coffee". They search "single origin coffee ethiopia yirgacheffe" or "tripel beer abbey-style belgian". I build the keyword tree per terroir / style / bean variety and structure long-tail product content where supermarkets are too generic.

tripel beer abbey-style belgian510/mLow
bean to bar chocolate 70%880/mMid
natural wine biodynamic france340/mMid
coffee (generic)74,000/mHigh
2
Story-driven product pages
Story sells — if it's structured

Specialty buyers want the story: the farmer, the origin, the process, the brewer. But without structure, no one (and no Google bot) reads your terroir novella. I build scannable product pages: story in modules + Product/FoodEstablishment schema with origin fields for SERP snippets.

Schema-ready content — story + spec in one
3
Food photography & Pinterest SEO
42% of foodies start visually

Food is the most visual domain on the web. 42% of pre-purchase research starts on Pinterest or via Google Lens. Image schema, structured alt text per product and Recipe schema (where relevant) turn your photos into traffic — not just Instagram fodder.

Coffee beans coffee.jpg
Chocolate choco.jpg
alt="Yirgacheffe single origin · light roast · floral notes"
Not "image1.jpg" — context-rich alt for visual search
4
Subscription & gift funnel
Recurring revenue + gift peaks

Specialty food thrives on returning customers and gift moments. A solid subscription flow + gift bundles (holiday season, Christmas, Father's Day) deliver 40-60% of DTC revenue. I build those flows + AI recommendations for "what fits what I bought before".

First purchase100%
Reorder within 60d42%

Loyal & gift12%
Goal: from 12% loyal to 22% within 12 months
Story sells

Pretty photos alone don't sell anymore.
Story in every pixel does.

Specialty buyers want to know where your product comes from, who makes it, and why it's different. No Instagram-filter tricks — structured story in your product pages, schema and gallery.

How we work

Audit. Architecture. Build. Scale.

Tight sprint, fixed price, fixed deadline — no open-ended retainer. You know up front what's coming and when.

— Step 01
Food audit
Which regional queries are you leaving on the table? Which claims sit in the danger zone? Which hospitality keywords are buyers searching for your category without you ranking?
— Step 02
Long-tail strategy
Map the top-50 local + hospitality long-tails where TripAdvisor & supermarkets aren't tuning. Per keyword, pick a page type (location page, product page, guide, B2B form).
— Step 03
Build & schema
Pages built, LocalBusiness + Event + Product schema implemented, claim copy NVWA-compliant. Ready for your seasonal peak (summer tourism, Christmas hampers, BBQ season).
— Step 04
Spike & measure
During the peak: monitoring + tactical adjustments. After: aggregate review, lessons for the next season, calendar for the next-up moment in your cycle.

Frequently asked

FAQ.

Do you work with breweries, distillers and winemakers?
Yes. The approach is the same — only the specific regulations and search terms differ. Delis, cheesemakers, coffee roasters, chocolatiers, jam/marmalade brands, hot-sauce makers and specialty food brands all sit within this niche. The mechanism (local + hospitality + claim-compliant + seasonal cycle) stays the same.
Do you also execute the implementation?
The Audit Plus delivers a workable roadmap. For implementation there are two options: (1) your own developer/marketing team executes it (the roadmap is built for that), or (2) we continue with a Local-Authority Sprint or Multi-market Sprint where I guide and build (parts of) the implementation.
What about seasonal peaks?
Breweries, food and drinks have strong seasonal patterns: summer beers and BBQ peak (Jun-Aug), brewery tours (Apr-Sep), Christmas hampers (Oct-Dec), winter stouts (Nov-Feb), vineyard visits (Sep-Oct). The keyword strategy explicitly factors in the peaks for your sector — when which pages need to be boosted. We always plan 14 weeks ahead.
My brewery is small/local. Do I have enough traffic for SEO?
Specialty food is an SEO-friendly niche: local tourism has high purchase intent and low competition outside the top-3 portals (TripAdvisor, VisitNL). Even small brands with 500-1,000 organic clicks/month can triple within 6 months — especially if the basics (LocalBusiness schema, Event schema, regional content) aren't in place yet.
How do I measure that it works?
Four metrics: (1) Organic clicks via GSC for local/regional keywords, (2) Average ranking position for your region + category, (3) Direct revenue from organic traffic in GA4, (4) Number of hospitality/B2B leads via form or phone (UTM tracking). First lift in 6-8 weeks, main impact in months 4-6.
Do you also work with B2B / hospitality-only brands?
Yes. For pure B2B food brands (wholesale, food-service, retail-supply) the focus is less on local tourism and more on category keywords ("craft beer wholesale", "organic jam hospitality supplier"). Schema architecture differs: more Product + Service, less Event. We often run a hybrid approach where B2C and B2B pages coexist.
Do you work with EU expansion (Benelux + other markets) for food/drinks?
Yes — the EU markets combined are several times larger than NL and search differently. Important: DE/AT/CH alcohol law and Lebensmittelrecht differ significantly from NL — what's allowed here isn't always allowed in DE. Our Food Multi-market Sprint covers that: hreflang setup, per-market claim adaptation, local food PR, and regional hospitality discovery.
Do I get a guarantee?
No rankings or traffic guarantee — those depend on Google updates and your implementation, so it would be unfair to promise. But: 30-day satisfaction guarantee on the Sprint and Audit Plus. Not happy with the roadmap or delivery? Full refund — your judgment counts. Plus for Site in 1 week: live within 14 days or setup fee back (delivery, that I control 100%). Not where you want to be after a Sprint? I work for free for a month to find the fix.

10+ years online marketing & SEO. Five large brands. One focus.

What I learned there I now apply as an independent consultant to DTC brands. Direct contact, direct delivery. No agency middle layer, no account manager, no reporting theatre.

What I do differently

The magic is in the combination.
So is the pitfall.

AI & Automation, SEO and Web Design are powerful on their own. Together they deliver a growth flywheel that keeps compounding. But deployed wrong, AI does more harm than good — and isolated SEO tricks or pretty sites without schema won't rank either. The three disciplines must talk to each other, not around each other.

AI & Automation
Wrong
ChatGPT prompts without SEO context, content published whenever, leads dropped into a generic inbox. Google's Helpful Content Update detects AI patterns and penalises rankings — traffic drops.
Right
AI with keyword research up front, schema in the template, lead routing & chatbot 24/7, email flows on autopilot. Content at scale in your voice · repetitive work gone.
SEO
Wrong
10 generic tips, same keywords everywhere. Slow site, no schema, no hreflang, no long-tail strategy — Google won't rank you for what matters.
Right
Long-tail keyword tree, schema stack, hreflang correct, niche-specific content. Found by the people actually searching — without ads.
Web Design
Wrong
Pretty hero, slow LCP, no social proof above the fold, generic checkout. Visitors bounce within 3 seconds.
Right
Mobile-first <2s, conversion elements in the right place, A/B testing built in. Visitors become customers.
